The Lindale Park Garden Club held its FEBRUARY GARDEN
CLUB MEETING on Thursday, February 24th.
The Garden Club, an arm of the Beautification Committee, meets in resident's homes &
gardens to discuss various subjects pertaining to local gardening. It's a lot of fun,
and we always end up laughing!
We had (23) neighbors
in attendance, with (8) ¡¡ãfirst-timers¡¡À this month: Gloria & Jesse
Amenedo, Lillian Chee, Ken Cousino, Nadia Hefferman, Mark LeJeune, Jose Lopez, and Jon Macrae.
We¡¯re so glad you all came!
We started with follow-up on last month¡¯s topic ¡¡ãsoil¡¡À. Attendees brought soil samples from
home for analysis, and learned what supplements were needed to make it ideal for the plants
or grasses grown in each specific location. We then introduced a new topic - "Herbs", led by Ken Cousino of Quality Feed & Garden. Guests took home an assortment of potted herbs ready for planting (courtesy of Quality Feed &
Garden) and cuttings brought by neighbors.
As always, we used theme related games as a tool for teaching, and winners took home prizes! This month¡¯s games included ¡¡ãWhat¡¯s that
Smell?¡¡À, where players had to identify the herb or spice by it¡¯s smell. Congratulations to the
winners of the Garden Games and early-bird Door Prize! The menu included Spring Rolls, Cookies, Friendship
Bread, and Green Tea & Bananas Fosters Coffee. Yumm!
The next LPGC
Meeting will be held at the residence at 406 Fairbanks St., Thursday, March
17th at 6:30 pm. Don¡¯t miss the next
Garden Club Meeting where we'll introduce a new topic. And with the weather turning beautiful, we're expecting it to be outside...see you in the garden!

If you didn¡¯t make the JANUARY GARDEN
CLUB MEETING, you missed a really fun time! A lively bunch of 13-neighbors gathered
for garden-related fun! We enjoyed
Fruits & Veggies, Homemade Nut Butters, Smoked Ham & Fig
Bruschetta, Nanny¡¯s Strawberry Jello Cake
(there was none left!) and lots more; No one left hungry, that is
certain! It was cold that night,
but as Kathy said, ¡¡ãIt was worth it!¡¡À
We
welcomed many first-timers: Gema Schuller, Gloria
Torres, Greg Wray, Hortencia & Jesse Montez and daughter,
Christina, Lydia Soto, Molly Hunt, Vickie Salinas, and Wayne Fowkes. We¡¯re
so glad you all came!
The pamphlet ¡¡ãSoil Care, Fertilizers & Garden Calendar¡¡À from Quality Feed & Garden
was the basis of our discussion. It featured our
neighborhood¡¯s typical ¡¡ãgumbo¡¡À soil, and the importance of a balanced
pH and regular soil testing. Neighbors
shared personal experiences with Lindale Park soil, and noted that some
may have sandy soil if our lots are on the ¡¡ãold golf course¡¡À. It was a helpful tool and prompted
our ¡¡ãhomework¡¡À, which is for each of us to test our soils before the February
24th meeting. Quality
Feed & Garden on North Main will pH test your soil for FREE! We¡¯ll share results at our next
meeting and discuss solutions.
We played ¡¡ãGarden Bingo¡¡À &
¡¡ãGarden Matching¡¡À games to test our knowledge of plant characteristics
and terminology. The games were high energy, and as expected we spent a
lot of time laughing! Some of the questions were a bit hard. But, we learned from those questions
and had fun doing it! When one member commented the questions were ¡¡ãwritten
for gardeners¡¡À, we reminded her that this is a ¡¡ãGarden Club¡¡À. (Thanks for the chuckle, Erma!) There was a gift for the first to
arrive and prizes for game winners, (Greg¡¯s favorite part!) Our exchanges this month were 3¡¡À Aloe
Vera offsets and home-dried Rosemary.
The next LPGC
Meeting will be held at the residence at 515 Eleanor St., Thursday, February
24th at 6:30 pm.
We¡¯ll follow-up on the soil testing and introduce a new topic -
¡¡ãHerbs¡¡À. Don¡¯t miss the next
Garden Club Meeting¡they¡¯re getting bigger every month, so it¡¯s
expected to be a good one!

arrive! This month¡¯s trades were
Red Kolancho & Pink Heirloom Vinca.
Thanks
to Nancy Brown for bringing the Centerpiece of cuttings from her garden, and Scarlett for decorating with her Apple
